Cut Flower Supplies
Bergland cultivates a variety of products which supplies the local as well as the export market. We specialise in a variety of foliage products and provide 18 varieties of Protea cut flowers, which we cultivate in the Hekpoort area.
We propagate all our own plants and supply a selection of plants for landscaping usage.
Bergland aims to cultivate the best possible stem length, shelf life and our cost effective production methods ensures continuous research in conjunction with the University of Pretoria. Trials are regularly done on hydroponics, tissue culture and nutritional balances to determine the perfect fertigation requirement.
Proteas are grown for their cut flowers on the Magalies farm. Louw Roos manages the cut flower production as well as the plant propagation, which is done at the Krugersdorp farm. Varieties propagated and grown are:
- Jupiter (susanue x eximia)
- Susara (Sunanae x barbigera)
- Mundi Lacticolor
- Leukodendron types (Safari Sunset, Blush and Jester)
Soil, water and leaf sample analysis is done periodically to ensure that the needed nutritional ingredients are consistently supplied. Test- and control groups are used to determine the result of fertilisation, and correct addition of trace elements, etcetera.
Locally, tests were concluded to establish the effects of various shade netting colours and light intensity on different plant species. It was found that green cloth produces the best results for all our products, while white did not perform well.
Bergland has 10Ha under shade houses on their Krugersdorp farm and a further 10Ha on the Marico farm as well as 25Ha on open fields. The varieties produced here are:
- Leather Leaf Fern
- Pittisporum (miniture)
- Safari sunset
