Turf supplies

The most common type of lawn Bergland supplies is sods (instant lawn), however, depending on the application, plugs, seeds or sprigs could be more suited to your spesific application.

We deliver and install all types of lawn in areas accross Greater Gauteng (Roodepoort, Krugersdorp, Randfontein, Carletonville, Sandton, Johannesburg, Soweto, Randburg and Midrand), City of Tswane (Pretoria, Centurion, Rosslyn, Soshanguve, Ga-Rankuwa, Hammanskraal, Akasia, Soshanguve, Mamelodi, Atteridgeville and surrounding areas), Ekurhuleni (Alberton, Bedfordview, Benoni, Boksburg, Brakpan, Edenvale, Germiston, Heidelberg, Isando, Kempton Park, Nigel, Springs, and surrounding areas), the Vaal Triangle (Vereeniging, Vanderbijlpark, Sasolburg, Meyerton, Parys and surround areas) and the Northwest Province (Rustenburg, Mafikeng, Ventersdorp, Potchefstroom, Zeerust, Thabazimbi, Hartbeespoort, Brits, Magaliesburg, Fochville, Klerksdorp, Orkney, Lichtenburg, Vryburg and surrounding areas).

Sods (Instant lawn)

Bergland produces 200Ha Pennisetum Clandistinum (Better known as Kikuyu) turf per annum. We supply weed-, fungus– and insect-free product, which is actively growing.

The lawn is supplied in 460mm x 740mm slabs, three slabs per square meter. All our harvesting operations are handled by specialised Kesmac harvesters, cutting all sod the same size and thickness. All grass harvested is palletised for the convenience of delivery to any destination, thus saving on labour and handling cost. Grass laid on properly prepared soil base-establish within 14-21 days, regardless of season

Sprigs

Sprigging is the planting of Kikuyu roots or stolons, which can be done either by hand, specialised Rota-Dairon rotovator, or specialised sprigging planter (Fairway planter). Although the same result as sodding is achieved, different densities can be used to plant sprigs. 5:1 ratio (5m˛ actual planted surface from 1m˛ of sod) normally reaches complete coverage in one growing season.

The fairway planter is ideal for planting athletic fields, golf courses, recreation areas, sod and turf farms, areas surrounding ponds, or anywhere you want to keep the land surface as undisturbed as possible. Fairway planters broadcast sprigs rather than cultivate the ground.

Plugs

A lawn plug is a pre-rooted cutting, or seedling, with a complete root system. Plugs are easy to grow and perfect for a do-it-yourself lawn. One tray of 18 plugs, spaced 20cm apart, can cover an area of 0.5 square metres. Lawn plugs are easier and cleaner to buy and handle than conventional slabs of instant lawn (sods). Lawn plugs are ideal for uses where you ultimately do not want to disturb a precision level such as golf course tee boxes or cricket pitch surrounds.

Lawn plugs are ideal for patching and great for renovating. They can be used to grow a new lawn, where complete coverage is usually achieved in one growing season (6-12 months). This means that plugs are a cheaper alternative to sods, provided that you have a complete growing season to establish the lawn. Plugging is an extremely labour intensive process.

Note that plugs are only available on special order.

Seeding

Kikuyu is recommended. Seeding is normally done by four different methods; seeding by hand; with a precision seeder; or (Gandhi- or drop-seeder); or Hydroseeding

Hydroseeding is a mixture of water, grass seeds, fertilizer, organic supplements, mulch and soil binders. This mixture is sprayed on a prepared area or on embankment walls. This product is ideal for sports fields, golf courses, road embankments, soil rehabilitation and for erosion control measures. Hydroseeding is the preferred method to conventional seeding, since the seeding combination and mulch offers improved water retention. The seeding density is determined by grass variety and intended purpose. Hydroseeding is guaranteed to give full coverage. This product is supplied for minimum quantities no smaller than 3,000 square meters. A minimum of six months is required to gain full coverage.

Conventional seeding is generally used where grass species, other than Kikuyu is specified. It is a cheaper alternative to sods, however, a minimum of six months is required for full coverage. This is the most cost effective option to acquire a new lawn, but takes the longest time to establish. Conventional seeding does not have a optimal germination rate. For example, Kikuyu provides at best only an 80% germination rate - other varieties provide an even lower rate. Note that you can only apply post-emergence herbicides to eradicate weeds, once the lawn has reached 4-5 leaf stage. All weeding processes should be done manually either by hand or by lawnmower. Pre-emergence herbicides may not be applied at all.
